On Thursday, Feb. 20, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), in collaboration with the City of Apache Junction, began a street lighting improvement project along Apache Trail and Superstition Boulevard designed to enhance nighttime road safety.
This $1.6 million project—100% fully funded through the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP)—will provide an additional 118 streetlights on both sides of Apache Trail from Palo Verde Drive to SR-88 and the south side of Superstition Boulevard from Meridian Drive to SR-88 to ensure proper illumination for the entire roadway width.
HSIP is a Federal-aid program aimed at significantly reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries on all public roads.
The need for street lighting was identified through the development of the 2019 Pinal County Strategic Transportation Safety Plan (STSP), which utilized 10 years of crash data and safety plan findings from various sources, including ADOT, Maricopa Association of Governments, Central Arizona Governments, and Sun Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization.
In 2019, the city’s Public Works Department submitted an HSIP project application to ADOT and was subsequently awarded state funding for the design and construction of the street lighting.
ADOT is overseeing the project and selected Michiana Contracting, Inc. as the contractor. The contractor has successfully completed the boring process and started installing direct burial poles. Once all the poles are installed, they will be powered by the Salt River Project. This project is anticipated to be completed in two weeks.
