In a trashy twist on public art, the City of Casa Grande is turning its garbage trucks into moving masterpieces. The Public Works Department’s Sanitation Division has announced an innovative program called the “Traveling Garbage Gallery.” With nearly 32 square feet of “canvas” on each truck, these heavy-duty machines are about to become the most unlikely art galleries in Arizona.
The program isn’t just about beautifying the streets, though. It’s part of an anti-littering campaign aimed at encouraging residents to keep Casa Grande clean and beautiful. Artists are being asked to incorporate themes that highlight the importance of maintaining a clean city.

The city plans to wrap five garbage trucks initially, providing ten canvases for local artists to unleash their creativity. Selected artists will receive a $100 award for their contributions to this unique public art project.
Casa Grande residents are particularly encouraged to apply, with a submission deadline of October 25, 2024. The city is looking for designs that reflect positivity and are in good taste, steering clear of any offensive content or advertising.
The chosen designs will be unveiled at a media event before the trucks are assigned to their routes. With the Sanitation Division covering 341 miles of streets and 39 miles of alleys, servicing more than 21,000 residential accounts, these artistic garbage trucks will certainly make an impact.
So, keep your eyes peeled, Casa Grande. Your next great art experience might just be picking up your trash. For more information or to submit a proposal, interested artists can contact the Public Information Office at PI*@Ca**********.gov or visit www.casagrandeaz.gov.
