Wildfires and Notification: Understanding Pinal County’s Alert Systems

In the wake of recent wildfires and evacuations, Pinal County officials are strongly encouraging residents to register for the Pinal Emergency Notification System (PENS). Supervisor Jeff Serdy highlighted the importance of this system during the latest Board of Supervisors meeting.

“District 5 is especially highly vegetated,” Serdy noted. “With the Siphon Fire, you know, the Ready Set Go system got to ‘Set’ for a lot of the residents up against the mountain. There was a lot of worry.”

The recent fire events have exposed a communication gap, with many residents relying on informal networks for critical information. “A lot of people just communicate among themselves, but they don’t know how to get the news,” Serdy added.

PENS aims to bridge this gap by providing official, timely notifications about emergencies such as wildfires, floods, and other natural disasters common in mountainous areas.
