SRP Urges Customers to Stay Alert for Utility Scams Ahead of Memorial Day Weekend
News Source: SRP
Ahead of Memorial Day weekend, Salt River Project (SRP) is urging customers and small businesses to stay vigilant against scams, which often increase during holidays.
Scammers may pose as utility representatives through phone calls, emails, text messages or in-person visits, demanding immediate payment and threatening service disconnection.
SRP will never require immediate payment over the phone or in person. If a customer is at risk of service disconnection, SRP will always send one or more notices by mail and, if a customer is enrolled in SRP eNotes, by email or text. SRP will call customers if they are at risk of disconnection but will not pressure customers into paying over the phone or request a particular payment method.
“We encourage customers to pause and verify their SRP account information before making any payment. If the caller is creating a sense of urgency to pay, hang up the phone and call SRP directly,” said Amy Gentry, Director of Customer Contact Operations at SRP. “Our customer service team is available 24 hours a day to answer questions and you can verify your account information online.”
Customers who receive a suspicious call from someone who says they are from SRP should hang up and call SRP directly at 602-236-8888 in English or 602-236-1111 in Spanish.
Common scam tactics include:
- Threats of immediate service disconnection unless payment is made on the spot
- Requests for payment through gift cards, CashApp, Zelle, Bitcoin or any other type of cryptocurrency
- Fake emails or text messages that emulate SRP’s official communications.
- Individuals posing as SRP employees and claiming to collect payment in person
- Caller ID spoofing that appears to come from SRP
Ways to protect yourself:
- Stay calm
- Hang up and call SRP directly
- Don’t share any personal information
- Never pay anyone at your door
- Avoid clicking on unverified links
- Report it
Ways to pay your SRP bill:
- SRP accepts payments online through SRP My Account™, the SRP Power App™ and SRP M-Power® App, or through its Paymentus website.
- Customers can also pay in person with cash at over 900 retail locations throughout the Valley. Please note that these locations require the barcode that is only available on a customer’s SRP bill or SRP cash payment card that is accessed via SRP My Account.
SRP is here to help and customer service representatives are available 24/7. Customers who suspect fraudulent activity or have been impacted by a scam can call SRP at 602-236-8888 or 602-236-1111 for Spanish.
