After five years of being closed due to severe flooding in 2019, State Route 88, also known as Apache Trail, is now open to high-clearance vehicles and four-wheel drive users. The 5-mile section between Fish Creek Vista and Reavis Trailhead Road has been reopened with some significant changes.

The interim project, which cost $4 million, restored the unpaved roadway to a condition that can accommodate vehicles with high clearance or four-wheel drive, in addition to utility terrain vehicles. However, there are some important restrictions for motorists who want to take on the scenic drive: no trailers will be allowed.
The road was damaged in June 2019 due to the Woodbury Fire, which consumed nearly 124,000 acres of the Tonto National Forest. The fire was followed by a storm that dumped six inches of rain on the fire scar, causing severe damage to the roadway. A large rockslide left a section of the road unpassable, and it took extensive repairs to make it safe for vehicles.

While the interim project has restored basic functionality to the road, ADOT is committed to making more extensive improvements in the long term. In 2023, the department completed a study that recommended $33.7 million in upgrades to make SR 88 more accessible and resilient to severe weather. The plan includes chip sealing, widening the roadway, increasing drainage capacity, rehabilitating or repairing existing bridges, and adding pullouts and other safety enhancements.
However, these improvements do not yet have dedicated funding, and ADOT is pursuing federal funding to advance them.
Motorists who want to take on the scenic drive are advised to be aware of the following:
- No trailers will be allowed on the road.
- High-clearance vehicles or four-wheel drive users only are permitted.
- Be cautious of newly restored sections of the road and follow all posted signs and rules.
- Watch for changing weather conditions, as severe thunderstorms can still occur in the area.

Overall, while the reopening of Apache Trail is a welcome development for motorists and recreationists, it’s essential to be aware of the restrictions and challenges that come with driving on this scenic but rugged road.
