Water Quality Precautionary Notice – Backup Well #4

News Source: Town of Florence

The Town of Florence was recently notified by its third-party testing laboratory that a water sample from Backup Well #4 showed a nitrate level of 13.6 mg/L, which is above the regulatory standard of 10 mg/L.

Well #4 is a backup well. While it is connected to the municipal water system, it is isolated by valving and was not used to supply water to the system at the time the sample was collected. The well is operated periodically to confirm proper functionality and to meet required testing. Historically, nitrate levels at this well have been below the regulatory standard.

The sample was collected on December 16, 2025, but the Town was not notified of the result until December 29, 2025. Results that exceed standards are required to be reported within 24 hours. The Town has addressed this reporting delay with the laboratory to ensure proper notification timelines are followed moving forward.

As required by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), the Town will post a public notice at Town Hall (775 N. Main Street) and on the Town’s website under Public Notices: https://www.florenceaz.gov/.

A follow-up sample was collected on December 30, 2025. The Town of Florence will share an update once those results are available.
