Sheriff’s Aviation Team Performs Critical Rescues in Extreme Heat
The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Super Huey helicopter performed two challenging rescues last week amid extreme heat conditions. On Monday, deputies were called to Sedona where they hoisted a hiker who had been missing for three days from a steep canyon. On Thursday, the aircraft rescued someone from extremely high elevation in Pima County. Sheriff Teeple noted that no other helicopter had the capability to lift someone in the intense heat conditions. The operations were carried out by the department’s aviation team, the Salty Sky Hogs, and search and rescue deputies.
Supervisor Serdy Release Heat Safety Video Following Recent Rescues
In response to recurring heat-related emergencies and fatalities, Pinal County District 5 Supervisor Jeff Serdy and Parks Director Scott Hamilton have released a safety video urging hikers to avoid summer recreation. Officials recommend avoiding hiking entirely during months without an “R” (May through August).
Essential Safety Tips:
- Bring at least one liter of water per planned hour outdoors
- Start hikes early when temperatures are cooler
- Turn back when water supplies reach the halfway point
- Wear protective gear: hats, light-colored long sleeves, sunscreen
- Plan for end-of-hike temperature, not just starting temperature
- Hike in groups and inform others of your plans
- Carry charged phones and flashlights for evening hikes
Additional Considerations:
- Monitor pets for heat distress (excessive panting may indicate distress, not happiness)
- Watch group members for heat stress signs: excessive sweating, confusion, excessive thirst
- Remember that desert areas remain remote despite feeling close to town
- Be aware that rescue operations put first responders at risk in extreme heat
