Eloy firefighters performed a donkey rescue after the animal became trapped in the Central Arizona Project canal near Highway 87 and Shedd Road.
Crews were dispatched following a report of the animal struggling in the water and fighting to free itself.
Battalion Chief Travis Hartman and Firefighter Hannah Hartman were both on duty that day. Additionally, both brought hands-on livestock handling experience to the scene.

The team used ropes and vehicles to pull the donkey safely to land. No personnel entered the water at any point. After the animal reached shore, crew members calmed and dried it while Travis and Hannah checked for major injuries. They found none.
A local livestock expert took custody of the donkey until an owner can be located. How the donkey ended up in the canal remains unknown.
