The Apache Junction Mayor and City Council called for a Special Election to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 4, 2025, allowing voters to decide whether to extend the mayoral term from two to four years, effective January 2027 when the next elected mayoral candidate takes office.

The results of the Special Election show Proposition 493 passed, receiving 58.5% of “yes” votes from Apache Junction voters. By State Law, City Council is required to canvass the votes and adopt the results no later than 20 days following the election.

During the Tuesday, Nov. 18 City Council meeting, Mayor Wilson and councilmembers adopted the results of the Special Election, held a public hearing, and unanimously passed Ordinance No. 1571, officially amending the Apache Junction City Code mayoral term from two years to four years.

“I want to say thank you to the voting public for understanding the benefit this brings to our city,” Mayor Wilson said. “While I will not be running again, this change will allow for future mayors to provide more stable leadership, more effective representation, and a stronger foundation for the city’s future.”

The approved change aligns Apache Junction with 18 other valley municipalities within the region that also operate under a four-year mayoral term. It also brings the mayor’s term into alignment with the four-year terms already served by all Apache Junction councilmembers, creating greater consistency across the city’s governing body.

The amended term length will take effect following the conclusion of Mayor Wilson’s final term, which will take place in December 2026, and will go into effect in January 2027 when the newly elected mayor assumes office.
