The Pinal County Board of Supervisors approved new weight restrictions on five county roadways during their October 1, 2025 meeting, following a public hearing that drew no public comment.

Celeste Garza, Deputy Director of Public Works, presented Resolution No. 100125-RD25-025 to the board. The resolution adds specific county highways to an ordinance the county originally adopted in 2002 that authorizes weight limits on particular roadways.

“Under ARS 28-1106, local authorities may restrict truck and commercial vehicle operations and impose these weight limits as long as we place signage identifying those limits,” Garza told the board.

The resolution adds weight restrictions to five roads across three county districts:

  • Schnepf Road from Ocotillo Road to Germann Road (District 2)
  • Germann Road from Kenworthy Road to Schnepf Road (District 2)
  • Pima Road from Ironwood Drive to Schnepf Road (District 2)
  • Park Link Road from Camino Adelante Drive to State Route 79 (District 4)
  • Aravaipa Road from State Route 77 east to termination (District 5)

Garza explained that the county designates certain roads as weight-sanctioned when they have legal maximum vehicle weight limits based on engineering evaluations. She said the county imposes these restrictions because roads show accelerated wear.

“They’re just not made for designated heavy trucks,” Garza said. “They protect the roadways from premature damage. They reduce cost and maintenance for us, the public. They improve the safety of users, and they extend the usable life of the roadways.”

Vehicles exceeding the newly established weight limits face enforcement action and penalties. The county will install signage on the affected roadways to notify drivers of the restrictions.

Under a 2001 resolution, the County Engineer reports to the Board of Supervisors every six months on weight limits established during the preceding period, based on available data, soil conditions, traffic volumes, and application of the AASHTO Method of Flexible Pavement Design. Additional roadways may receive weight restrictions in the future based on these engineering evaluations.
