The Apache Junction City Council has called for a special election to be held on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, asking voters to decide whether to change the mayoral term of office from two years to four years.
Election Details
The November 4, 2025 special election will be conducted entirely by mail across both Maricopa and Pinal counties, where Apache Junction is located. Ballots will be sent to all qualified voters beginning October 8, 2025. Each household with a registered Apache Junction voter will also receive an informational pamphlet that will be mailed prior to September 30, 2025, according to the city’s election timeline. The pamphlet will include details on the resolution as well as arguments both for and against the proposed change.
Background
According to Resolution No. 25-03, when Apache Junction was incorporated in 1978, four-year staggered terms of office were created for members of the city council and a two-year term was established for the mayor. The mayor and city council now desire to submit the question of changing the mayoral term to voters.
The Ballot Question
If approved by voters, the change would be effective with the mayoral term of office beginning on January 5, 2027. The ballot will present the question: “Shall the mayoral term of office of the City of Apache Junction be changed from two years to four years, effective with the mayoral term of office beginning on January 5, 2027?”
A “YES” vote shall have the effect of changing the mayoral term of office to a four-year term.
A “NO” vote shall have the effect of leaving the mayoral term of office as a two-year term.
If a majority of qualified electors vote in favor of the proposed change, city staff will be authorized to present an ordinance to the city council amending the Apache Junction City Code to reflect the new term length.
Public Input
The submission period for ballot arguments supporting or opposing the question has ended. The names of persons or entities who submitted written arguments will be included in the informational pamphlet that voters receive.
