APACHE JUNCTION, AZ – Apache Junction High School students will soon have access to a new career pathway. Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) Chief Brad Calender presented details of the A3-U program to the Apache Junction Unified School District Governing Board on January 27, 2026. The multi-year program aims to prepare students for both higher education and the workforce.

New A3-U Program Prepares Students for Aviation and Drone Careers

The A3-U program takes its name from Apache Junction High School’s Aviation, Aerospace, and Unmanned Systems Program—three A’s and one U. It offers a cohort-based curriculum for students from 9th through 12th grade. Students who enroll will stay together throughout their high school years. Calender said this structure teaches “the foundations of teamwork” and gives students technical ability.

“We’re not just offering certifications toward the end of that program,” Calender said. “We’re making sure that these students actually know how to do this, how to succeed in those fields.”

Open House Draws Strong Parent Interest

The district hosted an open house at Apache Junction High School in mid-January. Parents and students got hands-on time with drones.

Gilbert Fire’s battalion chief brought a technical services van. Calender said the van gave students a chance to “see just some of the stuff that we would be able to offer with this type of program.”

“The open house was an awesome hit,” Calender told the board. “It was an exploratory opportunity for us to see just what some of our parents were looking for.”

Students in the A3-U program will have the opportunity to earn drone pilot certification.

Community Partnerships Drive Hands-On Learning

The district is working through partnerships with local agencies. In addition to the Apache Junction Police Department and Gilbert Fire, Mesa Gateway Airport will provide exposure to air traffic control and ground management operations.

“They are absolutely so excited to come out and teach our children how to do some of these technical programs,” Calender said of the public safety partners.

Program Aligns With District’s Vision for 2030

Superintendent Dr. Robert Pappalardo connected the A3-U program to broader district goals.

“It’s another pathway to looking at 2030 and beyond and what kids need to come out of high school being able to do,” Pappalardo said.

Board Members Voice Support

Board members expressed enthusiasm for the initiative.

“I think this is wonderful,” said Board President Dena Kimble.

This item was presented as a report and did not require board action.
