Sheriff William A. “Bill” Eck, retired Pinal County Sheriff, passed away peacefully in his home in Casa Grande on Monday, Nov. 18 at the age of 91. Bill was a veteran of the U. S. Marine Corps, serving honorably in the Korean War, but his life’s work was dedicated to law enforcement.

Bill began his law enforcement career in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, working his way up from patrolman to detective and later captain.

In 1974, he and his family moved to Arizona when he was hired as Chief of Police in Eloy.

He later joined the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office and served for many years as Undersheriff under Sheriff Frank Reyes.

In 2000, following Sheriff Reyes’ retirement, Bill was appointed Pinal County Sheriff. He never wished to run for political office and retired from law enforcement on January 1, 2001 when Sheriff Roger Vanderpool took office.
