Maricopa, AZ – The City of Maricopa is pleased to announce a new agreement with the United States Postal Service (USPS) that will allow the Contracted Postal Unit (CPU) at the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center (MLCC) to remain in operation.
This agreement ensures residents will continue to have convenient access to postal services at the MLCC. However, under new USPS guidelines, the City’s compensation model has changed. In previous years, the City collected a percentage of revenue from the sale of stamps and pre-paid packages, which averaged $30,000–$40,000 annually. Under the new contract, that revenue will no longer go to the City. Instead, USPS will pay the City a flat annual fee of $100.
While this change represents the only option presented by USPS, the City determined that the community benefit outweighs the financial change and that maintaining the CPU was the best choice to preserve uninterrupted service for our residents. We will continue to evaluate the evolving needs of our residents. As those needs grow and change, we will also pursue options that may allow us to restore lost revenue in the future.
The new agreement is effective immediately, ensuring no disruption in service. The City will continue to closely monitor usage and work with USPS to assess long-term service needs.
We are grateful to our residents for their patience and support as we worked through this process as well as our staff for their efforts in keeping this important service available and serving our community.
