DESCRIPTION:Every year\, in April\, there is a worldwide celebration\, International Dark Sky Week. Pinal County is always happy to promote a 30-minute event to encourage residents to reduce light pollution\, step outside\, and look up to enjoy the beauty of the night sky in Pinal County! \n\n\n\nLearn more about the importance of reducing light pollution and take a moment to enjoy the night sky by participating in Dark Sky Lights Out and any of these additional dark sky events! \n\n\n\nHow Dark Is A Dark Sky Community?\n\n\n\nDark Sky communities practice responsible outdoor lighting by shielding their light sources and using warm-color\, lower-lumen/watt light bulbs where light is needed.  Dark skies does not mean no lights on the ground. \n\n\n\nWhat is light pollution?\n\n\n\nLight pollution is the human-made alteration of outdoor light levels from those occurring naturally. \n\n\n\nComponents of light pollution include:\n\n\n\n\nGlare — excessive brightness that causes visual discomfort.\n\n\n\nSky glow — brightening of the night sky over inhabited areas.\n\n\n\nLight trespass — light falling where it is not intended or needed.\n\n\n\n\nWhat can be done about light pollution? \n\n\n\nThere are many ways to tackle the over-lighting of the night\, such as: \n\n\n\n\nChanging light fixtures outside your home or business\n\n\n\nUsing timers and motion sensors\n\n\n\nUpdating city streetlights\n\n\n\nPassing ordinances to enforce better outdoor lighting policies\n\n\n\nTalking to your neighbors about light trespass\n\n\n\nProtecting dark sky places\n\n\n\n\nSource: https://www.pinal.gov/1546/Dark-Skies

SUMMARY:Oracle State Park - Dark Sky Park Celebration and Star Party
DESCRIPTION:We will celebrate International Dark Sky Week and our designation from 2014 as an International Dark Sky Park. The evening will include fish tacos available for purchase from La Bufadora Food Truck starting at 6:30 PM\, a proclamation of International Dark Sky Week from Pinal County Supervisor McClure at 7:00 PM\, and star viewing with the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association from 7:30 to 9:30 PM. We will also have a ranger showcasing Oracle State Park’s computerized telescope\, which will project stunning views of deep-space objects for group viewing.  \n\n\n\nPlease meet me at the ranch house patio. If you would like a place to sit\, we recommend bringing folding chairs\, as our patio seating may fill up during the event. The Star Party does not require registration and is free with regular park admission. \n\n\n\nFor any questions about the event\, call the park at 520-896-2425 or email Ranger Michael at mbain@azstateparks.gov. DESCRIPTION:See event website to confirm time details. \n\n\n\nRanger Nikki will lead you on a hike to learn about saguaros and enjoy their blooms\, which serve as Arizona’s State Flower. We will also talk about prickly pear\, barrel\, cholla\, hedgehog and pincushion cacti. The route follows San Tan\, Stargazer and Moonlight Trails and returns via the Service Road for a 3-mile loop. The trail surface ranges from smooth and level to uneven with small to medium rocks underfoot. If you would like to learn how to document your findings via the iNaturalist citizen science project\, please download the free app at home and register with a username prior to arrival. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring snacks and plenty of water. Binoculars are helpful. Make sure your phone is fully charged to take photos.
